Winter is approaching and now is the time to prepare for the big tasks that need to be done to keep your garden wildlife-friendly during the frosty season. 

Creating warm and cosy homes for nature is very important, as is making the most of nature’s resources. So rather than hoovering up leaves, place them in a storage cage where they will turn into luscious leaf-mould – the perfect winter sleepover for hedgehogs and toads.

The RSPB have a very useful step-by-step guide to help you create your own leaf mould cage in around a couple of hours, and all you will need is some chicken wire, wooden stakes, old planks, basic DIY kit and wirecutters.
