The Phipps Bridge Garden Project

A project run by Sustainable Merton in collaboration with the National Trust, Merton Horticultural Society, Merton Council and the local community.
Phipps Bridge Allotments are run by Merton Council but the land is owned by the National Trust. In recent years they had become neglected. Six allotments were released to Sustainable Merton by the National Trust in October 2008. Over the next nine months approximately 40 volunteers spent over 1,000 person/hours converting the site from a jungle of dense brambles and fly tipped rubbish to a garden with paths, raised beds, a fruit cage, and a shed with a reception area. Money was raised from Quiz Nights and some generous donations from Merton Voluntary Service Council and Sustain
Sustainable Merton started teaching local school children about the joys of growing fresh organic produce. The local community have been involved throughout the project and have contributed their time and skills, as well as donations of recycled wood pallets, compost, tools, and much else.
And in Autumn 2009, with the encouragement of Sustainable Merton and the National Trust, Merton Council cleared the rest of the site, marked out plots and began to offer them to those on their waiting list.

There is still a lot to be done and
Sustainable Merton are calling for volunteers over the summer to weed and
water as well as to harvest and eat the produce. Or there is heavier work if
you want it! We already have several families with young children who work
and play on the site regularly, but we need more help.
WORK DAYS are on Wed / Sat / Sun
from 10 am till about 3pm.
