1 General Statement

In line with Sustainable Merton’s charitable objects, the organisation is committed to sustainable development (meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs) as a guiding principle within its work. Concern for the environment, including reducing the charity’s carbon footprint, is an integral and fundamental part of this commitment.

2 Reducing the impact on the environment from our operations

Sustainable Merton staff and volunteers will:

2.1 Promote responsibility for the environment within the organisation and to residents, businesses, faith groups and all organisations across the London Borough of Merton;

2.2 Identify and provide appropriate training, advice and information for members, residents, businesses, faith groups and all organisations across the London Borough of Merton and encourage them to develop new ideas and initiatives;

2.3 Reduce the use of energy, water and other resources where possible, ensuring projects are run in ways which minimise resource usage;

2.4 Encourage digital communication and minimise paper and printer use in our office and administrative work;

2.5 Encourage walking, cycling and the use of public transport as principal means of travel by members, residents, businesses, faith groups and all organisations across the London Borough of Merton;

2.6 Reduce waste created and where possible reuse and recycle before responsible disposal of surplus materials; use recycled and recyclable materials wherever possible;

2.7 Protect natural habitats and encourage local wildlife and biological diversity in the areas where we work;

2.8 Avoid or limit wherever practical the use of environmentally-damaging substances, materials and processes;

2.9 Work with local, regional and national partners to promote and encourage involvement in environmental initiatives/schemes;

2.10 Comply with all relevant environmental legislation/regulation;

2.11 Ensure that our policies and services are developed in a way that is complementary to this policy.
