Merton's Trees

Tuesday 28/02/12, from 18:30 at The Council Chamber, Civic Centre, Morden.

Find out how Merton's trees are managed, at an event hosted by the council's Sustainable Communities Overview and Scrutiny Panel.

Officers with responsibility for trees will give short presentations and a representative of Merton Tree Wardens will also attend to talk about volunteering opportunities in the borough. Please note that individual concerns cannot be addressed at this meeting.

 

 

Annual General Meeting 2011

Thursday 01/12/11, from 19:30 at The Guardian Centre, 67 Clarendon Road, Colliers Wood, SW19 2DX

The final lineup of guest speakers at our AGM on 1 December at the Guardian Centre, Colliers Wood, has been confirmed as:

  • Cllr Stephen Alambritis, leader of Merton Council
  • Chris Lee, the director for Environment and Regeneration, Merton Council
  • Ian Hutchcroft,head of South of England for the Energy Saving Trust

All three will have a lot to tell us on what is happening on the sustainability front, not just in Merton but further afield. Samantha Heath of the London Sustainability Exchange should also attend to tell us about projects similar to our own across London.

After we have heard from our speakers, you will have a chance to ask questions and meet other members over a glass of wine and some festive nibbles.

So as you can see, it promises to be a busy and interesting evening which you are warmly invited to attend.

The business part of the evening will take place from 7.30-8.00.

 

 

Living Green Centre Launch

Saturday 05/11/11, 12:00 to 16:00 at Morden Hall Park

The Livinggreen Heart of the Park project at the National Trust's Morden Hall Park is finally due to open to the public on Saturday 5th November 2011. The Heart of the Park project is a £2.5m project which centres on the sustainable renovation of the park’s 19th century stable yard and the installation of a micro hydroelectric turbine in the river Wandle – the first of its kind in London.

The stable yard will become the heart of the 125 acre park, with an innovative interactive exhibition about “green living”, a café, stalls for craft artists and other visitor facilities.

Come along to discover Morden Hall Park’s fascinating new visitor centre, with hands on activities, exhibitions and tours.

 

 

Bonkers About Conkers and Holly Heaven

Collect conkers from the avenue, and plant in compost provided by the café rocket. Help replant the holly hedge surrounding the rose garden.

 

 

Apple Day

Weekend of 01-02/10/11, 11:00 to 16:00 at Morden Hall Park

Discover more about the Great British apple with displays, apple tasting, and apple printing. Meet the gardener for a walk and talk about apples at 11a.m on Saturday.

 

 

Abundance Fruit Day

Saturday 17/09/11, 11:00 to 14:00 at St Mark's Church garden, between Wimbledon Library and The Alexandra pub

It's the Food Group's big day, chock-full of lovely fruit-based goodness!

Swap (or buy) jam, fresh fruit, chutney, and other fruity edibles. Bring along a bag of fruit for our fruit press to turn into lovely juice.

Also features recipes, cakes, an information stall, jam and bread tasting, honey, raffle, children's activities and entertainment by the International Ukulele Orchestra.

Green Energy Seminar

The Green Energy Seminar is organised by Sustainable Merton in partnership with Merton Council and supported by Transition Town Wimbledon and South Thames College. It's designed to help all those based in Merton to learn all they can about Green Energy and how they can benefit from the Government's new feed-in tariff. The event will be in two halves:

15:00-16.30 will focus on businesses, schools, churches and other organizations.

17.30-19.00 will cater for housholders in particular, though all are welcome to both sessions.

Refreshments will be served from 4.30-5.30 and this will be a good chance for you to meet installers of solar panels and to have any of your questions answered. If you need more information before the event, please contact Tom Walsh via tjwalsh56@hotmail.com.

 

Big Solar Shindig

Re-skilling Event

Concerned about disappearing skills like coppicing, making traditional sweets or creating tapestries? Is there a manual skill you would like to learn? Perhaps you are proficient in a craft yourself and would relish the opportunity to teach others. Come along to our talk and workshop to find out about how the death of traditional skills has impoverished our communities and how their resurrection chimes with the Transition Town ethos. This will be done with a view to creating local classes, groups and workshops for Wimbledon residents.

How to Save Energy in the House

Do you have rising fuel bills but a fixed or declining income? Do you want to "do the right thing" and reduce your carbon footprint, but are not sure where to start? Energy Professional Russell Smith describes the range of measures that householders can take to reduce their heating bills. How homeowners can reduce their energy costs

Russell Smith, whose Victorian era semi-detached house in Carshalton is now an “exemplar” eco-home, explains how homeowners can take practical measures to existing homes to improve their energy efficiency (and hence reduce their carbon footprint). The focus will be on low-cost measures which can be taken in typical existing homes.

 

 

“Draught-busters” demonstration

Saturday 29/01/11, at 95 Queens Road, SW19 8NR at 11:30 and 12:30 (if required)

A practical demonstration of how to draught proof your home, given by Martin Abrahams of Transition Brixton. The focus will be on how to draughtproof windows and external doors in a Victorian house, and the demonstration will include how to treat a sash window. The session will be aimed at people with minimal DIY skills and without having to use specialist tools. Materials will be available for sale (cost price). Host: Sustainable Merton trustee Ruth Baber. No need to book, just turn up at 11:30. If there are too many people, there will be a repeat session an hour later.

 

 

TTW Eco-Quiz

Monday 07/02/11, at the Dog and Fox pub, Wimbledon Hill.

Eco-gadgets to be won! The aim of the night is to socialise, have a good time, share ideas and inspiration in the splendid venue of the Dog and Fox. There will be a £10 charge per team, with no size limit (although the quizmaster might split up huge ones). There will be an environmental theme to two rounds. The other two rounds will be general knowledge.

Green Drinks

Second Wednesdays

Members of Sustainable Merton, Friends of the Earth, Transition Town Wimbledon and others gather for a drink or two every second Wednesday each month, from 8ish to late. The NEW venue is The Price of Wales pub, on Morden Road, near Big Yellow Storage.

Green Coffee

First Tuesdays, 9:30-11:00

Come and join Transition Town Wimbledon for morning coffee from December. It’s a great opportunity to discuss things with similar-minded people. The venue is Piaf on Wimbledon Hill Road, opposite Wimbledon Library. Hope to see you then.

Allotment work

Many of us go to the local farmer's market for our weekly shop. It's held at Wimbledon Park Primary School, Havana Road, off Durnsford Road, London SW19 8EJ.
