Transition Town Wimbledon

Transition Town initiatives grow from ordinary people deciding to do something positive instead of just waiting to see what happens.  The aim of transition is to move from high energy dependence to sustainability, with lower energy use, and to make our communities more pleasant places in the future.

Transition towns started in Totnes, Devon in 2006 when a group of local people got together to try to make their town more resilient and better able to cope with rising energy prices and climate change.  There are now over 130 transition towns and villages across the UK and over 1000 initiatives worldwide starting the process of becoming a Transition Town.

Transition town network

In March 2009 a small group of Wimbledon residents got together to form a steering group working towards helping Wimbledon become a Transition Town.  The aim over the next 12 months is to raise public awareness by holding film screenings, presentations, meetings and discussions.

Once local awareness reaches a critical mass there will be a big launch event when Wimbledon officially becomes a Transition Town. Small sub groups will form during this process and these will take the work forward, putting changes into action. These groups will focus on various aspects of the community, such as waste, energy, food, transport and education, where changes can begin to be made towards building a more cohesive community which is less energy dependant.
