Community Gardening in South Wimbledon
Local residents, in partnership with The Sultan pub and supported by Sustainable Merton, are working together to rejuvenating a herb garden on Deburgh Road.
Everyone is welcome to lend a hand! All you need is enthusiasm and your gardening gloves.
If you would like to get involved please contact Sustainable Merton to sign up!
Hi, my name is Abdulrahim and I am 13 years old.
I give to my community by volunteering on a gardening project called Dig Merton. I have worked on the community garden on Deburgh Road in Wimbledon. I helped plant a cherry tree, planted bulbs, herbs, strawberries and also put up a bird’s nest to attract wild birds.
My mum encouraged me to come along to a community gardening event with her because she loves gardening and I wanted to help build up her confidence because we were both new to the whole experience.
What I enjoy the most is spending time with my mum and getting to know my neighbours and also looking at the area we have worked on and thinking “I did that, I helped make this happen”.
Projects like these aren’t a challenge to me because I enjoy being active and helping out with activities which are different to things we do in school. I have met a lot of new people within the projects. I have also had the privilege to meet Councillor Andrew Judge who is a Labour Party Candidate while doing these projects.
I would like to thank the Sustainable Merton project coordinators for organising these projects. It is so much fun working together and I will definitely be joining in with future projects.
