Wimbledon gets fruity to reduce food waste

Updated: Oct 18, 2018

"On a glorious autumnal day, I visited the Abundance Fair in Wimbledon. As a new community champion, I took this opportunity to meet fellow champions and enjoy this wonderful event with my son. The fair was tucked away in the grounds of St Mark's Church and had a lovely village fair atmosphere, with a band, local singers and some lovely stalls selling an abundance of abundance from jams and chutneys, to honey, apple juice and cakes.

Sustainable Merton were promoting the brown food waste bins that many of us are familiar with. For those that aren’t, it was our opportunity to explain how to use these bins, the importance of recycling food waste and offering bins to those who wanted to get involved. Along with this, the champions were raising awareness of the work that Sustainable Merton does, calling for more community champions to help improve our local environment and raise awareness to others of the small steps that can be taken to move towards a more sustainable lifestyle.

The fair was a wonderfully positive and fun day, celebrating produce and the importance of ensuring nothing goes to waste."
