Mitcham Community Orchard

Partner Project

Award-winning community garden in the heart of Mitcham

Mitcham Community Orchard was as project initiated by Sustainable Merton and inspired 200 residents and 12 partners to transform a local derelict area of spare land into an award-winning community orchard with 30 different varieties of fruit trees, 7 raised beds, ponds, a soft fruit collection, a wild garden.

This success of this transformation was very much due to the partnership between Mitcham residents, Merton Council and Sustainable Merton, with the support and sponsorship of local businesses.

Awards include London in Bloom, Merton in Bloom, the national LGC award for community gardens, and a Team London Award.

The site’s development continues and it has been used now for numerous barbecues and parties by local residents and groups, and is fortunate to have local company ‘Grass Barbers’ carrying out regular maintenance. The orchard is a leisure facility to be enjoyed by everyone, and also provides an educational resource through informative signage.

If you would like to become involved in the project in any way - through volunteer gardening, providing publicity, learning more about planting and harvesting produce, please complete our volunteer sign-up form to tell us more about your interests.
