Consultation on the expansion of Heathrow airport

The Department of Transport has begun a consultation on the draft National Policy Statement on Heathrow Airport.

This will be an important step in the proposed expansion of the airport.

The draft Airports National Policy Statement sets out:

the need for additional airport capacity in the south-east of England

why government believes that need is best met by a north-west runway at Heathrow Airport

the specific requirements that the applicant for a new north-west runway will need to meet to gain development consent

Deadline for submissions: Thursday 25th May 2017

Heathrow Expansion and its effect on Wimbledon

An event on 17th Feb at the Everyday Church, Wimbledon, laid out the government’s argument in favour of a third runway at Heathrow. Green Coffee’s Joyce reports that ‘it gave all the positive points, but not the negative ones. For example it argued that a third runway would bring in thousands more tourists, but didn’t say how many more people would spend their holidays abroad’.

Friends of Wimbledon Town Centre’s March newsletter states that flights over Wimbledon are likely to increase from 8% of the time to over 70% of the time. This will mean a lot more noise and disruption for Wimbledon.
