BREATHE CLEANER AIR

Our Campaign

Air pollution is a big risk to health but there are lots of simple actions we can take to mitigate the worst effects and improve the quality of the air around us.

Our #BreatheCleanerAir campaign aims to reduce air pollution in Merton - one of London's many designated air quality action areas - through raising awareness of the effects of emissions on our health and the environment and inspiring residents to be part of the solution by taking our #BreatheCleanerAir pledge.

Why should you pledge today? For people and the planet.

Research by Hubbub shows that 83% of us are worried about the effect of air pollution on our health, and our families' health.

The World Health Organisation also reports that the transport sector is the fastest growing contributor to climate emissions.

With road transport being one of the primary sources of pollution in the borough, our #BreatheCleanerAir pledge focuses on simple actions we can all take to reduce vehicle emissions and avoid air pollution hotspots. Not a driver? You can still make your pledge and encourage others to rethink their travel choices so that we can breathe cleaner air in Merton.

Take action

Make your pledge

By taking the #BreatheCleanerAir pledge, you will be committing to doing your bit to help clean up Merton's air. Small actions add up, so if we each decide to make a change today, we can all play our part in tackling air pollution.

Build active travel into your day by walking, cycling or scooting to work or school rather than driving wherever possible
Choose less polluted walking and/or cycling routes and use quiet side roads to reduce exposure to air pollution.
Travel by public transport for longer journeys and/or instead of driving wherever possible
Stop idling your car when parked outside/nearby school sites, in traffic, at level crossings etc.
Get together with friends, family, colleagues, or fellow parents to create a car share club if/when driving is necessary

By submitting this form you agree to Sustainable Merton* storing your information for impact recording purposes and so that we can contact you regarding the pledges you have made. We will not share your information with any other organisations.

Thanks for making your pledge! Together we can Breathe Cleaner Air in Merton

I was shocked to learn that dirty air can even limit the development of children’s lungs. It’s great therefore to hear that we can all play our part in improving the quality of the air we breathe in Merton.

Isabelle, Community Champion

Sustainable Merton is particularly concerned by the harm poor air quality is causing our children and this is why we are working  with Merton’s schools to educate  children, parents and teachers all about the harm pollution can cause and the best ways of avoiding the worst of it."

Cycling to work:

Getting started

"I’m so glad I got over this “cycling in London is crazy” myth and discovered my free travel and gym pass instead. Cycling infrastructure in London still needs a lot of work to make the city safer for cyclists and more bike friendly but there’s enough help and guidance available to give it a go."
