BREATHE CLEANER AIR
Our Campaign
Air pollution is a big risk to health but there are lots of simple actions we can take to mitigate the worst effects and improve the quality of the air around us.
Our #BreatheCleanerAir campaign aims to reduce air pollution in Merton - one of London's many designated air quality action areas - through raising awareness of the effects of emissions on our health and the environment and inspiring residents to be part of the solution by taking our #BreatheCleanerAir pledge.
Why should you pledge today? For people and the planet.
Research by Hubbub shows that 83% of us are worried about the effect of air pollution on our health, and our families' health.
The World Health Organisation also reports that the transport sector is the fastest growing contributor to climate emissions.
With road transport being one of the primary sources of pollution in the borough, our #BreatheCleanerAir pledge focuses on simple actions we can all take to reduce vehicle emissions and avoid air pollution hotspots. Not a driver? You can still make your pledge and encourage others to rethink their travel choices so that we can breathe cleaner air in Merton.

I was shocked to learn that dirty air can even limit the development of children’s lungs. It’s great therefore to hear that we can all play our part in improving the quality of the air we breathe in Merton.
Isabelle, Community Champion
Sustainable Merton is particularly concerned by the harm poor air quality is causing our children and this is why we are working with Merton’s schools to educate children, parents and teachers all about the harm pollution can cause and the best ways of avoiding the worst of it."
Tom Walsh, Community Ambassador

"I’m so glad I got over this “cycling in London is crazy” myth and discovered my free travel and gym pass instead. Cycling infrastructure in London still needs a lot of work to make the city safer for cyclists and more bike friendly but there’s enough help and guidance available to give it a go."
