Merton’s second annual ‘Let’s Celebrate Healthier Communities’ event took place on Saturday 27th May at Canons Leisure Centre in Mitcham.
Following on from last years successful Healthy Schools Celebration, ‘Let’s Celebrate!’ returned to Canons Leisure Centre, Mitcham, on 27th May, with this years focus on celebrating ‘Healthier Communities’.
“The glorious weather once again drew in the crowds to this free event, with approximately 1,000 people attending! Activities on offer included weight lifting, sumo wrestling in padded suits, smoothy bikes, tennis, a steel band workshop, BMX track racing and of course, Sustainable Merton’s seed sowing stand.
Myself and our lovely Community Champions – Tash, Justyna and Salim helped children sow over 120 pots of seeds to take home, from a variety of vegetable and flower seeds. A good handful of adults couldn’t resist joining in too.
Two attendees from the previous year had wonderful success stories of the seeds they sowed with us at last year’s event. One family grew a sunflower almost as tall as their house, and one of the children successfully grew basil that she enjoyed on her homemade pizza!
A very big WELL DONE to Bec Yusuf (MVSC), Kristina Burton (Mitcham Town Community Trust), Better Leisure Canon’s Leisure Centre Team and all the volunteers who helped to make the event such a success once again.
