Annual General Meeting, 1 December

The final lineup of guest speakers at our AGM on 1 December at the Guardian Centre, Colliers Wood, has been confirmed as:

  • Cllr Stephen Alambritis, leader of Merton Council
  • Chris Lee, the director for Environment and Regeneration, Merton Council
  • Ian Hutchcroft, head of South of England for the Energy Saving Trust

All three will have a lot to tell us on what is happening on the sustainability front, not just in Merton but further afield. Samantha Heath of the London Sustainability Exchange should also attend to tell us about projects similar to our own across London.

After we have heard from our speakers, you will have a chance to ask questions and meet other members over a glass of wine and some festive nibbles.

So as you can see, it promises to be a busy and interesting evening which you are warmly invited to attend.

As with all these events, not everyone who is invited will be able to attend. So the trustees would like to thank all those of you who have supported us and the work we do over the past year and we look forward to even more successful partnerships in the next.

The business part of the evening will take place from 7.30-8.00. The Guardian centre is the headquarters of MertonVision and can be found at 67 Clarendon Road in Colliers Wood.

Living Green Centre

The UK's only EU-sponsored Living Green Centre is launching at midday on Saturday 5 November, becoming the centrepiece of Morden Hall Park.

Come along to discover the fascinating new visitor centre, with hands on activities, exhibitions and tours. There are also more events planned later in the autumn.

It will be a big day for the National Trust, Sustainable Merton, and the whole borough.

Abundance - Wimbledon's windfall festival

There are so many fruit frees in Wimbledon's parks, streets, woods and gardens - and so much fruit is left to fall and rot.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to do something about it? Well, we are.

Transition Town Wimbledon's Food Group is leading the Abundance project, run in conjunction with the John Innes Society and other groups.

The Abundance Fruit Day Abundance Fruit Day is on 17 September - with fruit swop-shop, fruit press for juice, local honey, raffle, jam and bread tasting - also featuring the International Ukelele Orchestra.

If you know of a fruit or nut tree that never gets picked, would like to help with picking, or have skills like baking and jam making, contact abundancewimbledon@gmail.com or phone 020 8946 3750.

Sustainable Merton

Sustainable Merton is a community led initiative which gives local residents, organisations and businesses the chance to stimulate practical action. The aim is to make our area a sustainable community at a time of peak oil and climate change.

Some of our activities are:

  • Giving talks and screening films on sustainability, peak oil and climate change ; and running stalls at local events and fairs to publicise our aims.
  • Working with local organisations, for example our joint partnership with the LB Merton and Groundwork London in the Low Carbon Zone project in Mitcham, funded by the Mayor of London.
  • Promoting local food production with a community garden allotment at Phipps Bridge. We use this to take gardening lessons into schools and help them and local people to develop their own allotments.
  • Supporting Transition Town Wimbledon, the Merton Schools Eco Forum and the National Trust with their forthcoming ‘Living Green Centre’.

We hold a monthly social meeting for exchange of ideas (Green Drinks), and produce a quarterly newsletter for supporters.

Transition Town Wimbledon

Transition Town Wimbledon aims to prepare the town for the twin challenges, and opportunities, of peak oil and climate change.

TTW is an autonomous arm of Sustainable Merton that is rapidly expanding its portfolio of activities and projects. Part of the international Transition Towns movement, it was formed after Wimbledon's Odeon cinema hosted the UK's best-attended showing of the film The Age of Stupid in 2009.

Highlights so far include:

  • Hosting the first London showing of 'In Transition 1.0: The Transition Towns Film' at Bishop Gilpin School.
  • 'Rethinking Wimbledon' in March 2010, TTW's first major public engagement event.
  • Forming the Wimbledon Food Group, to bring more local land into food production.
  • Forming the Wimbledon Energy Group, to raise awareness on peak oil and take practical action on energy consumption.

Get in touch with TTW at ttwimbledon@yahoo.co.uk. TTW also maintains a page on Project Dirt, south London's green networking and events website.

The
