Listen to Merton's Electoral Debate

Updated: Apr 18

🗳️ This May, half the population of England will have the chance to vote in Mayoral Elections and IT'S TIME TO MAKE CLIMATE ACTION A PRIORITY! ✊🏿

Ahead of the elections next month, Sustainable Merton partnered with Merton Friends of the Earth and Merton Cyclists Group to host a free Electoral Debate at Merton Arts Space, Wimbledon, on Thursday 11th April.

Video coming soon!

Moderated by Sustainable Merton CEO, Diana Sterck, the event gave over 80 local residents a rare opportunity to ask questions and hear London Assembly Merton and Wandsworth candidates debate their environmental policies and positions on issues particularly pertinent to London, Merton, and Wandsworth 🌍

Our thanks go to candidates Dr Pippa Maslin (Green Party), Leonie Cooper AM (Labour), Sue Wixley (Liberal Democrats) and Councillor Ellie Cox (Conservatives) for their participation and dedication to engaging with the community.

"As Merton’s local environmental charity, Sustainable Merton is delighted to have provided an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns about the climate to those who can influence policy change and hold the Mayor of London accountable.
“We need urgent action at all levels and this event offered a platform for communities and candidates to come together for a more sustainable future.”

Diana Sterck, CEO of Sustainable Merton

“Friends of the Earth believe that after the debate all candidates will be better informed about their voters’ demand for more green jobs and green spaces, less traffic and pollution and more money to be spent to help householders insulate their homes to keep heating bills down.”

Gabriel Partos, Co-ordinator of Merton Friends of the Earth

Sustainable Merton supports the London Friends of the Earth Network's efforts to push the mayoral candidates to adopt its Climate Action Plan and take its mayoral pledge.

So far, two of the main party candidates have signed (Green Party and Liberal Democrats) which is great progress, but we need Susan Hall of the Conservatives and Sadiq Khan to sign up, too!

YOU CAN HELP BY ASKING THE NEXT MAYOR OF LONDON TO PLEDGE ACTION FOR THE CLIMATE!
