Fridge Video Cover Image & Email Header (16).png

We are delighted to announce that our short film, “Where Food Meets Friendship: The Story of Merton’s Community Fridge” has been nominated for the Smiley Charity Film Awards!

This special video, beautifully created by TVOX, captures everything that makes the Fridge what it is — the joy, the connection, the community spirit, and the difference we can make when we come together.

Winning would help us share that message far and wide — inspiring new volunteers, reaching more residents, and giving this story the recognition it deserves.

Voting closes on Friday 30 January 2026.

What is a Community Fridge?

Anyone can visit — no referral or paperwork needed.  Just bring your own bag!

We are a community where members make friends, share tips, and connect with local support.

"It's become a hub of help, food, a shoulder to cry on, someone to say hi, someone to make you feel better. And it works both ways."

Each year in the UK we throw away nearly 15 million tonnes of food and drink. Nearly half of this is perfectly good to consume!

Merton’s Community Fridge is a long-term initiative to tackle food poverty and reduce food waste in the borough.

Every week, our volunteers and cargo bike riders collect surplus food from local shops, and businesses, then redistribute it to anyone who needs it.

By sharing good food that would otherwise go to waste, we:

  • Reduce food insecurity and hunger

  • Support physical and mental wellbeing

  • Create a safe, welcoming space for all

  • Prevent thousands of kilograms of CO₂ emissions each year
