Local people come together to shape Canons House Community Garden

Canons House Community Garden is a shared green space in the heart of Mitcham, overseen by Sustainable Merton and brought to life by the people and groups who use it.
The garden is home to a variety of projects, each with its own character. St Peter and Paul’s Catholic Primary School tends a wildflower meadow, Focus41 (a local mental health charity) grows seasonal vegetables and Friends of Canons House, alongside Cricket Green School pupils, grow and care for garden beds full of all sorts of veg, fruit and flowers. Together, these activities make the community garden a place where people can connect with nature, grow food and enjoy the outdoors.
Alongside these individual projects, Sustainable Merton coordinates the wider garden and runs volunteer sessions for the wider community, bringing people together to care for the shared spaces. Activities include seasonal jobs such as weeding, mulching, turning compost, pruning and general garden maintenance. This year, volunteers have also helped transform the ornamental bed with a new prairie-style planting scheme, fill gaps in the herb garden and plant three new fruit trees, selected to provide produce for the community.
These sessions help keep the garden looking its best and support improvements that will benefit the community for years to come. They’re also an opportunity to get outdoors, learn new skills and meet others who care about their local environment.
Fancy getting involved? Sustainable Merton welcomes volunteers of all experience levels to join our monthly Saturday gardening sessions. Whether you’re a keen gardener or simply enjoy being outdoors, there’s always something to help with.
