91 Merton Streets Join Community Planting Weekend to Create Greener Neighbourhoods

Last month, 91 streets across Merton took part in Sustainable Merton's second Community Planting Weekend of the year, bringing neighbours together to transform local spaces and create more vibrant, nature-friendly neighbourhoods.
Together, residents planted over 1,500 plants in tree pits, verges and front gardens, helping to make our streets greener, more biodiverse and more welcoming for both people and wildlife. 🌻
From colourful front gardens to shared planting spaces outside homes, these small changes add up to a big difference. More plants mean more habitats for pollinators, improved local environments and more opportunities for neighbours to connect with one another.
Creating More Wildlife-Friendly Streets Across Merton
Our Merton Garden Streets project supports local residents who want to take action in their own neighbourhoods by creating greener streets and encouraging biodiversity.
By adding pollinator-friendly plants and spring bulbs, residents are helping to support bees, butterflies and other important wildlife while making their streets more beautiful and enjoyable places to live.
Community gardening is about more than plants - it’s about bringing people together, building pride in where we live and creating stronger connections between neighbours.
Get Involved in Our Final Community Planting Weekend
There’s still time to register your street as a Merton Garden Street and join our final planting weekend of the year on 19–20 September.
Registered streets will receive a starter pack including:
🌻 A selection of pollinator-friendly plants
🌷 Spring bulbs to brighten future seasons
🌱 A bag of compost to help you get started
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or completely new to planting, everyone is welcome. It’s a simple way to make a positive difference in your local area and work alongside your neighbours to create a greener Merton.
