Business Champions

Sustainable business

We are working with local businesses to inspire and influence them to make changes to reduce their impact on the environment.

At a time when concern about the escalating climate crisis continues to grow, businesses are stepping up to help make Merton a more sustainable community now, and for future generations.

Partnership

With the support of our partners: Merton Chamber of Commerce, Love Wimbledon and Geeks Ltd., we are engaging businesses across the borough, and we are seeing real enthusiasm from both employers and employees who want to play their part in Merton's overall sustainability agenda. By working together we can have the greatest impact.

Join the green conversation

In partnership with Merton Chamber of Commerce and Morden-based software development company Geeks Ltd., we are creating a network of local businesses within Merton sharing best practice, ideas and plans to become more sustainable.

Through regular networking events hosted by the 'Green Geeks Club', businesses have an opportunity to share their stories of the positive actions they are taking and services they offer to make business in Merton more sustainable for the benefit of the environment and local economy.

These businesses are demonstrating that although the initial challenge might seem overwhelming, it is possible, and we can all be part of the solution. Read more

Geeks Green Club has been individually trying to move Geeks to becoming a more sustainable business and have made some great improvements over the last year.

It was really exciting and inspiring to talk to so many people who are doing great work and we look forward to working within the community further to help make our borough greener.

Plastic Free Merton

Business Champions supporting our #PlasticFreeMerton campaign have made important changes to what they offer the consumer.

They have switched from single-use plastic options to non plastic alternatives.

These businesses are doing their bit and getting good feedback from their customers for it.

There is still more to be done, so let's keep working to beat plastic pollution!

CREW

CREW is a community-led non-profit group focused on overcoming the challenges businesses find in developing a sustainability model. We help accelerate London on the journey to a low carbon, sustainable future.

CREW has experience of delivering retrofit projects that help businesses undertake energy-saving initiatives, that they would otherwise lack the experience, skill, capacity and finance to undertake individually.  This has resulted in operating cost savings, available to recycle into direct service delivery, as well as saving carbon emissions.

What we offer:

  • Technical Expertise in energy efficiency and renewable energy/heat retrofit Project Management Capacity and Capability to allow business, community groups and residents to focus on their priorities while we do the work

  • Track Record of Delivery – DRCA, Devas, CREW Solar installations, Islington Sea Cadets, Parent House and Unity Church.

  • Successful at raising funds – Grants from GLA, Wandsworth Council, Project Finance Loan from BA Carbon Fund, UKPN Power Partners fund and Islington Carbon Offset Fund.

  • Rooted in the local community – Led by volunteers with a strong connection to the area

  • Community focus – profits are recycled into the community to fund energy advice cafes, sustainability education sessions, and seed fund new projects.

FIRST MILE

The waste industry can be a dirty business, but to First Mile it's a source of inspiration...

"We set out in 2004 on a mission to revolutionise waste and recycling for businesses. Along the way we've pioneered some awesome tech, to help us deliver a hassle-free, reliable service that is good for our customers and the planet.

And because we believe in a world where everything can be recycled, we go out of our way to find creative solutions; only items that can’t currently be salvaged go to waste, where they generate Green energy."

From office paper to coffee grounds and old spacesuits, First Mile has got a plan for them and nothing goes to landfill.

Their wide range of recycling services to cover all your business waste and collection needs includes:

  • Commercial general waste - Zero to landfill

  • WEEE recycling - safe disposable of electricals

  • Food recycling - Half the price of waste

  • Confidential paper and data recycling - 100% safe destruction

  • Compostable packaging recycling - Conditioning for the soil

  • Flexible plastics recycling - Revived as new bags.
